I find that any great day riding through the hinterland of the Gold Coast, inevitably leads to the most dangerous part of the whole day, being anytime spent travelling down the M1. Cars just don’t seem to be interested in any other road user or anything that means they have to look in a side mirror.

After 20 years of riding, I have come up with a couple of hints which get me through the passage of danger, the M1.

Cars just don’t seem to be interested in any other road user or anything that means they have to look in a side mirror.

When I’m travelling in the left lane, I always stick to the right hand side of the lane. It gives me a good view of the road ahead and an opportunity to appear in two of the mirrors of the person in front (they’ll only be looking in one). I also find it keeps the cars from trying to lane change on top of me, however, I can’t say this is effective 100% of the time though.

When I travel in the right lane, I try to stick to the left  hand side of the lane. Again, it gives me a good view of the road ahead and an opportunity to appear in two of the mirrors of the person in front. It also give me an option for a lane change if the world gets ugly in front. I also find that especially if your behind a truck, cars in the left lane can see you in the lane when they are making their decision to change lanes (again though, I can’t say this is effective 100% of the time).

When I travel in the right lane, I am always using my peripheral vision to sight the blinker stalk(on non european cars) and steering wheel of the car I am passing, to see if there is any movement towards making an non-indicated change of lane my way.

Just a few things which get me through the M1, hope they help.

Safe Riding, Tojo.

Hey Tojo. Being an ex rider and driving the M1 regularly, I don’t think I would ever ride the M1 again. People don’t look for cars let alone bikes. Following too close, speeding, using mobile phones, changing lanes erratically happen every day - I love your suggestions however you might add tips like counter steering, having your headlights on, wearing bright clothing and ride as if your playing red rover and someone is definitely out to get you.

    Stay safe

      When Lane Spilitting Goes Wrong

This is a story from Brazil.  The reaction from the driver is totally unjustified, however I would suggest the rider should not have kicked the car in the first place.
