I was always told the important factor of choosing a helmet was to consider the value of your head and purchase one accordingly, for example $10 head = $10 helmet. I have like many out there found the importance of a good helmet more so by accident than by reading the functions and features.
Around 4 years ago i was involved in an accident through some fault of my own and walked away with a broken back. I found the true importance of a good helmet i believe saved me from potentially a more serious injury. I had a braking issue going into a corner and ended up going head first into concrete culvert, smashing a hole in the helmet yet still not suffering any serious head trama, which I put down to wearing a good quality helmet.
When choosing your helmet try them all as everyones head is different and different helmets suit different heads. My head is a shoei head and I have had a few over the years. But ensure it’s a good fit and it has what your looking for. TRY THEM ALL, you have nothing to lose but a little time.

Great advice Brian. I am surprised how many riders make the initial investment and then keep wearing the helmet until the lining inside starts falling apart or the straps start fraying. You replace the tyres because they are bald, cables because they are frayed and brake pads so you can stop. And the helmet is more important than all of those.
