I remember when Northbrook Parkway was opened and linked the back road from Wivenhoe Dam to Mt Glorious. Brand new road surface in pretty good condition with plenty of sweeping bends. A great days ride.  BUT

resulted in some of the most horrific motorcycle crashes and fatalities. At one stage it had the most fatalities per section of road in Australia.  There were cases of the Ambulance being called to attend a crash and after they arrived at a crash scene and loaded up the motorcyclist and headed off to the Ipswich Hospital only to get a call asking where they were. Another crash had occured and the ambulance attended the second crash. There were helmets on split posts every 500 metres.  What changed…………

A few people from Main Roads, Ambulance, Police and Road Safety staff got together and this is what happened:

  1. Line marking is on the road every couple of hundred metres so that emergency services can attend the right location.
  2. A helipad site was organised to quickly evacuate casualties
  3. Run off areas were put in to reduce collisions with guard rails and trees
  4. A significant amount of education was also done

Fatalities are nothing like they used to be all due to the committed work of a number of agency staff to make a difference.

Yes mate remember the work that was put into the area by the MT Glorious Road Action Group..and remember going up there with you with a speed gun one day ..even I was shocked at some of the speeds we saw in short distances there between bends..
People probably don’t remember or realise the work that went on behind the scenes over the years to achive what is in place there now..
