In a move to make Gold Coast Bike Week more family friendly the organisers have made some significant changes to the event format and activities.

On Saturday (23rd May, 2009) the Gold Coast Bulletin reported that the organisers, Nick Bullen and Neil Bolam, have decided to shorten the event to 3 days and include more events suitable for children and women.

There will be children’s colouring-in competitions, a gala ball, and a “women in motorcycling” day. The organisers also plan to involve local schools in the festivities.

The organisers are hoping that the changes to the event will distance it from bikie gangs, although they acknowledge that they could not stop gang members from attending the event. They are, however, working very closely with the police and tougher alcohol and security restrictions will be put in place.

The event will be held in late August at the Carrara Indoor Stadium and organisers are hoping to attract up to 15,000 bikers to the event.

Does this mean that there might be some things there for us sports bike riders? I’ve thought of going to Bike Week but it seems more for Harley and cruiser guys and hey, that’s not my scene!

If the premise is to make it more “family friendly”, then dropping the bikini wash and associated girl parades would be a good start. It is a show about bikes. Kids and women dont need to be left with the impression that girls are just another product to be viewed. My two cents worth anyway.

Craig, I have to agree with you here as well. When I go to a bike show I want to see bikes and associated things, and personally I don’t associate bikes with bikinis. Sure it adds to the spectacle but I have to wonder about the quality of the show itself if the way of attracting attention is through bikini clad girls. Smartly dressed girls presenting on trade stands - yes, that could be appropriate. But unfortunately there are guys out there that will strongly disagree with this. Here’s hoping that common sense prevails with the show organisers.

    Spot on Steve….
I have for a long time wondered why promoters and manufacturers of products have had to asscociate sex and scantily clad women, or men, with the thing they are trying to sell.
To me, it rather suggests that the product or event isn’t actually as good as they might otherwise suggest
If an event or product is advertised well, is good and fairly priced, then it will sell itself. Bad or substandard products dont deserve to survive by virtue of the skin presented with it. They deserve to die a natural death and be replaced by something that is better.
