I was chatting to Sgt Bradyn Murphy from the Gold Coast District Traffic Branch recently about his involvement with BikeSafe.

BikeSafe is a UK national police led initiative that seeks to engage riders in a conflict free environment with the aim of increasing their awareness, creating a genuine desire to learn about safer riding and ultimately to help lower the number of motorcycle rider casualties.

By passing on their knowledge, skills and experience, police motorcyclists can help riders become safer and more competent.

The program is designed to bridge the gap between the rider, Police and training organisations. Bradyn points out that BikeSafe is not accredited training and is not designed to replace recognised training. Indeed, one of the programs goals is to encourage further training.

A rider participating in BikeSafe can expect to gain knowledge in:

  • Attitudinal issues in relation to traffic incidents
  • Collision causation
  • Positioning
  • Observation
  • Hazard perception
  • Systematic methods
  • Cornering
  • Overtaking
  • Braking
  • Use of gears

By passing on their knowledge, skills and experience, police motorcyclists can help riders become safer and more competent. They can help riders to increase their ability and confidence, and get even more enjoyment from riding a motorcycle.

Approval has been granted to Bradyn to undergo BikeSafe here in Australia.

Bradyn has vast knowledge and experience both as a rider and in training motorcyclists. He has been a Police Officer since 1985 and a Police motorcycle rider since 1988. He holds a Certificate IV in Police Driver Training, is a qualified Senior Driver Trainer in Police road motorcycles and has spent 7 years in charge of motorcycle training for the Queensland Police Service.

If you would like to be a part of BikeSafe submit the Expression of Interest Form below.  An information session is to be held on an evening and details will be posted as soon as they are available.

Bradyn should be congratulated for going above and beyond the call of duty. Some people are glad to just go to work, put in the hours and go home. Some go that bit further to make a difference. Here is a bloke who loves to ride and wants to give something back. I look forward to hearing how many attend and their feedback.

    Good luck Bradyn.

This is great. Being from the UK i have attended the Bikesafe schemes and they are definitely a way to help you improve your skills, and helps the police build better relationships with Bikers. I am amazed there are no real advanced rider groups here such as the IAM http://www.iam.org.uk/aboutus/IAM+Motorcycling/. Further training is available in Australia but it’s expensive. The advanced motorcycling scheme offers people the chance to Improve their skills under the eyes of qualified instructors, but without the expense. Bikesafe is a good start.

I’ve just moved over to Qld from Perth and there is a great difference in driving styles between the two states. It’s a been 8 months since I’ve been on a bike can anybody suggest where I can get some more experience on riding and organised rides out as I really don’t fancy going into the hills on my own. There was a great social bike scene in Perth, especially for learners and females - just bought a Suzuki GSXR 600. Thanks
