During a recent road trip through New South Wales and Victoria I saw some innovative and creative billboards, displaying road safety messages for car drivers and motorcycle riders.  The most prominent billboard for car drivers in NSW was the lovely lady displaying her ‘pinkie’ finger and that billboard features on western and coastal roads.  I noticed motorcycle related billboards and signs, with discreet and clever messages, strategically placed in high risk areas in NSW and Vic.

The pictures show billboards and signs from the NSW and Vic road trip and also some signs in Qld, along with the MATES billboard.

  • The “pinkie” lady billboard features on country and city roads in NSW.
  • The two yellow motorcycle signs were seen on the Great Alpine Way road in Victoria (photo Vic 4 and Vic 5) and are an awareness message to both car drivers and motorcycle riders.
  • The two red road signs (MRD 1 and MRD 2), on roads in the Gold Coast Hinterland, are specifically for motorcyclists.
  • Billboards (Vic Roads 1 and Vic Roads 2) were seen on Phillip Island, Victoria and provide a subtle and positive message about speeding.
  • Billboard (Vic Roads 3) was seen on the Great Alpine Way road in Victoria with a straightforward message.
  • Billboard (RTA sign) was seen at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales and displays a riding tip for cornering.
  • The MATES billboard featured on Gold Coast roads late last year and early this year.  It is a compassionate message from a motorcyclist’s family - ride safe, stay smart.

What do you think about the billboards and signs?

I like the signs, they remind me to stay alert. We are engaged in a dangerous and extremely rewarding activity. Over time we can negate many of the dangers through awareness. I paticularly agree with the hinterland signs and I think there should be more of them. On the mountain roads, I see riders ‘hanging’ over the centre line and many cars crossed over too. Thats something motorists should pay more attention too. I’d like to see a sign that gets that message accross.

mates.org.au have a mobile billboard on Kingston Rd at Marsden. Great to see. Pity there is a need though.
