From 1st July 2009, new Queensland Government laws apply for safer riding by motorcycle riders. Three new laws relate to:
- LAMS - Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme;
- Pillion Passenger restrictions; and
- Displaying P Plates.
LAMS - Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme
The previous RE licence restriction up to 250cc is replaced with the LAMS scheme. From 1st July 2009, RE motorcycle licence holders can only ride motorcycles approved by LAMS. LAMS approved motorcycles are based on the performance capacity of the motorcycle, not the engine capacity as in the past. There are no changes to R licence holders.
Pillion Passengers
From 1st July 2009, RE and R learner riders are not allowed to carry pillion passengers when learning to ride a motorcycle. Learner riders are still required to be supervised by an appropriately licenced person and that person can ride in a side car, follow on another motorcycle or in another vehicle.
Displaying P Plate
A person holding a P1 or P2 licence, and from 1st July 2009, obtains a RE or R motorcycle licence, the rider is required to display a P plate (red for P1 and green for P2, the same as car P licence holders). The motorcycle P plate must be displayed on the rear of a bike or on the back of a vest worn by the rider. The law applies to all motorcycles, including mopeds.
