Honda Australia Rider Training (HART) held a motorcycling event at their Pinkenba centre on Saturday 4th July to which interested parties were invited to “try out” their motorcycling skills with a view to perhaps becoming our future bikers.  A team of instructors introduced a number of brand new riders to the art of motorcycle riding.  Many of the “recruits” were riding for the very first time and were obviously a little apprehensive at first.  I am sure the introductory classroom session helped allay some of their nerves.

The dedicated track at the centre catered for about five riders at a time in the basics of bike handling such as moving off (they had to push each other around initially), stopping and turning.  Although the odd person found it safer to pedal their machine around the track without the engine running, they soon got the hang of it and even began to change gears before too long.

I noticed one lady arrive in a taxi.  She apparently chose to participate in the event straight from the airport where she had just stepped off a plane.  On completion she called the taxi back and departed very contented.

Some rather bent and buckled fence posts around the perimeter were testament to earlier mishaps but fortunately none of our riders ended up entangled in the wire mesh.  The more experienced were taken on a short road ride where they practiced their newly acquired skills in a slightly more open environment.  All of them returned safely with no apparent bumps or scrapes.

It was nice to see Queensland Transport there with their display trailer and the Gold Coast City Council’s Smart Rider Training outfit was also present.  A couple of other motorcycling businesses were also evident but unfortunately the expected crowd never eventuated.  Perhaps the cold wind kept them away.  Those who were unable to make it missed out on some great bacon rolls and BBQ snags.
