Congratulations to all MATES.

Yesterday, 8th October 2009, at a prestigious award ceremony at Parliament House, Brisbane, the Honorable Rachel Nolan, MP, Minister for Transport presented MATES with a Queensland Road Safety Award - Commended in the Community Category.

The Queensland Road Safety Awards are a joint initiative of the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland (CARRSQ) and Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) and supported by a number of government and community organizations, including Queensland Police, Queensland Transport and Main Roads, Leighton Constructions and Radio Station 96five.

Winning a Queensland Road Safety Award is a significant achievement and brings prestige and recognition to MATES.  The award recognizes and honors the outstanding efforts of MATES, which is an initiative to improve motorcycle safety on Gold Coast roads, and the award is in recognition of the contribution and ongoing commitment to motorcycle safety by MATES.

The Queensland Road Safety award recognizes and honors the outstanding effort of MATES in the contribution and commitment to motorcycle safety on Gold Coast roads.

MATES can be very proud to be awarded the Queensland Road Safety Award - Commended.  Without the support of all MATES, the award would not have been possible.  MATES, give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done and importantly, MATES must continue the enthusiasm and commitment to ensure future support of MATES.

A big thank you to the mates who represented MATES yesterday at the award ceremony (see their photos and a photo of the award below).  Special thank you to Kym and Andrew, who themselves have sadly and personally experienced the trauma of a motorcycle crash.  Kym, Andrew and Sam (now a resident of Tasmania) tell their stories at Real People, Real Stories, Real Emotions. MATES urges you to take the time to watch their video stories.

Congratulations to all. I am not surprised. It ceases to amaze me that when a few people get their heads together and tap into each others experiences, wisdom, networks and just plain old passion, things like MATES just happen. Keep up the good fight because I am getting back on the bike, much to my wife’s disgust. I want to be part of changing the statistics so if more of us are riding and living the tide must change….surely……..

I would like to thank Ron Barry for his dedication to saving lives. Ron is a selfless individual who never wants any recognition. Ron gives up alot of his personal time to be involved in Mates and many other road safety issues. I also think he gave up his spot at the awards ceremony so we could be there.

Thank you Ron on behalf of all of us at Mates, the world needs more men like Ron Barry and I am proud to be apart of his team.

Andrew. Thank you very much for your kind comments. You are correct; I am passionate about road safety and dedicated to saving lives on our roads, because in my job I have seen too much road trauma and I personally know how road trauma affects families and individuals, like you and your family. Your contribution to MATES is very much appreciated and thank you for attending the MATES award ceremony. If MATES helping MATES saves one life on our roads, it has been successful, but MATES aims is to save a lot more than one life. Thanks again.
