I came across this moving story recently in the QWeekend magazine. It’s a ‘real life’ story that stopped me in my tracks and made me think. I think that we all tend to get a bit de-sensitised and blasé at times about road safety. Every day we hear on the news about a traffic accident, many of which result in a death or serious injury. Sometimes we even stop for a few seconds and think “Isn’t that terrible? Another one!”

What I think that many of us forget is that these statistics are ‘real’ people who have families and who have futures that can be drastically changed within a few seconds. I hope that this story, as tragic and heart-wrenching as it is, will make some of us think the next time we get on our bikes. (And a huge thanks to our Emergency Services!)

The article was written by Amanda Watts and was published in Qweekend - The Courier-Mail Saturday Magazine on 10th October 2009. It is reproduced here with permission from Queensland Newspapers Pty Ltd.

I missed the Saturday paper- thanks for putting that up! I agree it is easy when we hear of another crash to just think of it as that. When you read the word for word it brings the whole situation into another light. I have been fortunate not to have witnessed a motorcycle crash firsthand but have seen the aftermath of losing many friends this way. Unbelievable job by the people that deal with these phone calls!!

Knowledge of the simplist details can be the difference between life and death..
As Motorcyclists we must be vigilant not only for ourselves but also for others on the road.
Our initial actions and responses may save a life..
