A recent trip to the Australian Motorcycle Museum at Haigslea was a great ride with a fantastic destination.

The Museum is located on the Warego Highway, about 15km west of Ipswich and is definitely worth a gander for anyone with an interest in motorcycles. There are over 200 bikes on display and no doubt a little nostalgia will pass by, on the odd one that may have been a dream in your youth, or your first fang, as the crew that headed out found out.  There are trail, road, old, new, rotaries and a number of bikes from the western block that you may never have heard of.

A motley crew (Ibis, Spike, Big Arms, Clarkey and Tojo) and a variety of Cruisers, sports bikes and crossovers left from Mudgeeraba at 8.30am (not a real early start) and headed west along Worongary Road (which becomes Gilston Rd), a quick left down Hinde Rd and left onto Latimers Crossing Rd.

We then hung a right onto Nerang-Muwillumbah Rd and cruised up through Advancetown back towards Nerang. Crank a left at Clagiraba Rd and then a nice cruise through the wineries and up over to Nerang/Beaudesert Rd. Left out of here and head out through Canungra (past the Outpost, great pie and coffee) and then on to Beaudesert for morning tea at the Bakery (near KFC at the lights).

After a bit of stop, revive and get revved up, we headed towards Boonah, with fantastic flowing, open corners. Just beware of the roadwork speed limits due to the new dam being built. At the Boonah turn off, it’s a right up Boonah-Ipswich Rd up through the fantastic hills and wide open corners, with a couple of nice straights thrown in.

As you hit the Cunningham Highway hang a left and head for Amberley. Very important to keep the eyes on the road here, as there are many airborne distractions from the Air Force base as you cruise through this part of the world. Look for the signs to Amberley and head right at the Ipswich/Rosewood Rd. We now hang a right at Haigslea/Amberley Rd. On the left you’ll go past the Air Force Firefighting Training pad, complete with an F111 mock up. Then it’s over the rail crossing at Walloon and keep heading for the Warrego Highway. At the intersection, hang a left and head for Toowoomba. Don’t be worried by the signs with Darwin on them, some of our crew were, as they thought I was taking them for a Wolf Creek moment.

Head along the Warrego for about 5kms, and keep an eye out on the left for the Sundowner Hotel (keep this in mind for lunch, great steak sandwich). This is Butlers Rd and a left here and another 250metres will see you at the front of the Museum.

The museum is open 7 days a week from 9.30am – 4.00pm. Cost is $15 for Adults and $10 for kids and this includes free tea & coffee (Which you’ll want to take advantage of, because you’ll be here a while reminiscing).
