A midweek run to Kyogle via Boonah and back up through Murwillumbah and Tomewin, was a great way to get rid of the cobwebs and clear the head.

The normal suspects and a few imports (Ibis, Action, Big Arms, Barree and Tojo) and the normal variety of Cruisers and sports bikes left from Mudgeeraba at 8.30am (we don’t get away early, do we) and headed west  along the normal route to Beaudesert.

A stop at the Beaudesert Bakery (we’re so predictable) kept the energy levels up, and then off to Boonah. A quick top up of fuel for everyone (some of these bikes have such small tanks), and it was full steam ahead for Rathdowney, along the Boonah-Rathdowney Road. Gets a bit narrow in parts but is basically a good road. Keep an eye on some of the warning signs for corners, as there are a couple that tighten up half way through.

At the T intersection at Rathdowney, hang a right and pick up the Mt Lindesay Hwy. The road is spot on and you travel past the Palen Creek correctional centre, then up through the twisty bits (excellent fun) to the border gates. This road has just being resealed and is just the ticket for keeping the cornering skills up, as do the many logging trucks that frequent the road.  About 9kms past the gates will see you grab a left and jump on to the Summerland Way, bound for Kyogle.

The road to Kyogle is open and flowing and has some wonderful scenery. You’ll pass through some small towns, including Wiangaree (which is the western turnoff to the Border Ranges National Park), and cross the railway line a few times. Into Kyogle for fuel and food, and the crew headed for the Food Hall (burgers are good) in the main street on the right hand side heading south.

After a munch, we headed for Kyogle Rd (just near the servo at the Y intersection) and onwards to Murwillumbah. Watch for the turn to the right for Murwillumbah, about 4kms out of Kyogle, as one of our party, Action, went sailing off into the distance with the rest of us lined up on the side of the road laughing and wondering if the deafening Banjoes might halt his progress.

The road is fairly tight and the surface goes from good to rough, but it is a great part of the world and the landscape makes up for bouncing. Head on past the turn off to Nimbin (don’t breathe to deeply through here or you could end up seeing all the colours of the rainbow), skirting the edge of Mt Warning on your right, on the left you’ll see the turnoff to Clarie Hall Dam, which is the catchment for the Tweed area (and the reason that Tweed never has water restrictions) and on through Uki to Murwillumbah.

As you enter Murwillumbah, at the T intersection, crank a right down Woolumbin St, then a left up Brisbane Rd (opposite the park), then another left into Wharf St, and finally a right onto Queensland Rd. This will take you past the showgrounds and onto the Sugarcane flats. Up past Dungay State School (watch out for the school zones and daylight savings time), and start to wind up the the Border gates at Tomewin. From the border gates, the road follows along the border ridge line until it heads down to the valley floor and onto Currumbin Valley Rd. At the bottom of the hill hang a right and follow this all the way into Currumbin.

Really fun ride, but allow a rush free time frame so you can enjoy the roads and the company.

Yeah, tx for the write up and photos. That is a great route. Am planning to do same trip next weekend. It’s worth the short turn-off to Nimbin to see the local culture. Always entertaining to stop there.
