Ok, what’s the go with Hyundai’s and me? Seriously, do I have “Hyundai magnet” written all over my helmet or something?

Last year I was nearly run over in a servo by a woman who backed up her Hyundai without looking and today I was almost cleaned up in a corner on a country road by a young guy who must have thought he was practicing for Bathurst - in a Hyundai Excel for God’s sake!

There’s something really scary about a Hyundai at full tilt

When Hyundai designed the Excel they certainly didn’t have a World Championship in mind, and one that must be pushing 10 years old isn’t going to handle anything like the V8 supercar he was probably dreaming he was driving.

For me the corner was an uphill right hander. But for Mr “Aren’t I so cool in my Hyundai” it was a downhill left and maybe slightly off camber and he had the thing cranked to the max, the tyres a good 30-40cm across the centre line screaming with understeer and the car leaning out of the corner almost as far as I had the bike leaning into it.

Fortunately for me I was able to pick the bike up, run a little wider and then have another crack at the corner and all went well. Had I been going a bit harder I wouldn’t have made it through, and if I was closer to that centre line I swear the roof of Mr “My Hyundai’s a Ferrari” car would have taken out my head.

It was a scary reminder to give myself a bit more room and not hang over the centre line.

So somewhere tonight there’s probably a guy telling hero stories of how fast he could get his bucket of bolts through corners and how this crazy bike rider nearly hit him. And they think us motorcyclists are idiots.

This post gives strong support to not using racing lines or riding stances when road riding…road riding to be done safely needs a different approach completely ..safety margins ..margins which allow for what may go wrong..what the other vehicles and road conditions may create in our path..
We all like to emulate Casey Stoner with a bit of bodliy hangoff or knee out but in reality it is another hazard for the serious road rider if positioned incorrectly to allow for the mistakes of other road users..

Very interesting thanks for that thought provoking post…
