Official figures for motorcycle sales in Australia during 2009 have been released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and show a decrease of 13.6% in overall sales. Whilst this may be alarming to many, Australia has actually fared much better than most of the world, with sales in the US down a staggering 44% to September last year and Japan reporting that demand in some sectors has been reduced by as much as 55%.

Honda once again topped the sales figures thanks to it’s contract to supply the CT110 “postie bike” to Australia Post. The CT110 was, once again, Australia’s top selling road bike and including it in the figures edges Honda slightly ahead of Yamaha in overall sales for the year.

Taking the CT110 out of the equation gives us a look at the “real world” sales - since you can’t actually (or would you want to) go into a Honda dealer to buy one.

Kawasaki’s Ninja 250R then takes top sales honours both overall and in the road bike category. The Yamaha XVS650 was the top selling cruiser, in the sports touring category the Suzuki GS500F was the top seller and off road also went to Suzuki with the DR-Z400. Excluding the CT110 also places Yamaha at the top of the overall sales figures for the year.

A summary of the sales results are below, and a full download is available from the FCAI website.

Yes, there are sales figures in the report for scooters and I’ve added them to the story for you. And you are right, I’m sure there are many MATES members on scooters who should all be included - how dare I leave you guys and girls out :) Appropriate kick up rear end accepted.

Hasn’t taken Hyosung long to get in the top 5 and why don’t one of the other brands make a postie bike?
