  3. A favourite ride of mine to escape the hustle & bustle of the Gold Coast is the scenic run through to either  Tumbulgum or Murwillumbah via the rainforest.

Heading down Scenic Drive you will be confronted with spectacular views of the Tweed Valley and Bilambil Heights. As you pass through the tiny village of Bilambil you can either turn right and visit Ilnam Estate Winery or left to ride through the beautiful, lush rainforest. The forest road has several twists and turns and is most enjoyable when riding at a slower speed. With reasonably heavy overhead growth the road can be very slippery through the few weeks of winter.

The peacefulness of this area is broken only by the occasional roar of a motorcycle.

  4. Two of the biggest biker rallies in the world occur in the country that shares borders with both Canada and Mexico. Daytona in Florida has bike week in late February, early March, whilst South Dakota’s Sturgis bike week is in early August each year.

Both are equally famous as far as rallies are concerned with both wanting bragging rights as to which is the biggest and best.

Morgan and Wacker Gold Coast are running a ride day on 21st March where they will have 16 different BMW motorcycles available for test rides. The location is still to be confirmed but is looking like being either Canungra or Beechmont.

Rides will be available from 9am through to 3pm and to book a spot or for more details, contact Rick Gard on (07) 5591 4822.

  6. This year, for the first time, the Canungra Rider Survivor is a joint initiative of MATES and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (SEQ South) Road Safety Team.

The aim of Rider Survivor is, through education and awareness, to keep motorcyclists (and other road users) safe on our roads. It offers a chance for riders to discuss concerns with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and other government agencies in an informal and non-confronting environment.

  7. SMART is a road safety initiative of the Gold Coast City Council that offers professional instruction for licensed motorcycle riders. The program’s overall objective is to reduce the incident of motorcycle crashes in the city and to promote safe motorcycle travel by improving rider skills and knowledge of local and hinterland roads.

The program has been running for 3 years and has won two Queensland Road Safety Awards for its contribution to road safety.

Five times 500cc World Champion Mick Doohan supports the program as its patron and wants to help motorcycle riders be the best they can be. He believes rider education and ongoing training are the keys to avoiding crashes.

The training is conducted on carefully selected public roads under the guidance of professional motorcycle instructors. With Council subsidy, one day’s tuition with HART (Honda Australia Rider Training) costs $45.

  8. One of the most interesting and innovative things I saw at the recent Australian Motorcycle Expo was the new Reevu helmet.

The Reevu RV MSX1 is the result of 7 years of development. The helmet uses a patented mirror system that allows the rider to see directly behind - the area that is the largest blind spot for a motorcycle.

Australian and NZ distributor Cary Murphy is very enthusiastic about the helmet because of its safety benefits. “The Reevu helmet can help prevent accidents, as the rear view technology provides the user with the same awareness given by the rear view mirror in a motor car.”
