Welcome to the Bike Safe Newsletter 3/2009.

I would like to thank all those that attended the Australian Motorcycle Expo and came and had a chat. Over the three days I would estimate that we had several thousand people visit and ask a variety of questions. 90% of people were very receptive with the other 10% hopefully leaving with a better understanding of the QPS and its policing.

We will never keep everybody happy but unfortunately that is the way it is with policing. All we can do is endeavour to keep the road toll low and I thank your efforts in helping.

At this stage the next Bike Safe session will be held in May. In April I will be attending the NSW Police Academy for the 2010 Solo Cycle Forum. This forum is being attended by all Police motorcycle instructors from Australia and will also be attended by Police motorcycle instructors from LAPD, California HWP, UK and New Zealand. The forum is being held over three days with the final day as a skills demonstration by all states.

This is a good opportunity to see how other states and countries instruct in motorcycle techniques and skills and to transfer ideas.

BRAKING

I would like your assistance in a number of questions with regards to EMERGENCY braking. Note that these questions and your responses relate to EMERGENCY braking only. For example you are travelling down the road and a car pulls out from a driveway with no warning and you must stop or else you will be involved in a crash.

1. What methods have you been trained in with regards to emergency braking? ie rear brake then front brake or front brake then rear brake, changing down gears etc. (Note this is an example only. You may have been trained a different way and this is not how we train police)

2. How long ago was it you were trained in this method?

3. Have you ever had to apply the brakes in an EMERGENCY?

4. If you answered YES. Did you remember to do everything you were trained. Did you have time to change down gears? Did you remember to rear brake/front brake or vise versa?

5. What was the outcome?

Thanks for your time in relation to these questions and you can reply direct to my email or on here.

Next time you turn the key, remember: make your ride about the journey rather than the destination. You can enjoy that once you get there.

If there is anything you would like addressed whether it be legislation, riding tips, techniques or general riding questions. Please drop me an email.

Cheers
