On Friday 15th October, Steve McDowall and Ron Barry presented to the Queensland Road Safety Awards Community Engagement Workshop on the success of MATES.
The workshop was run by CARRS-Q, the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland, and attended by delegates from government, road safety groups and major corporations who are actively involved in road safety.
Since its inception, MATES has actively worked with the motorcycling community to reduce the number of fatalities from motorcycle crashes.
In 2007, 19 motorcyclists were killed in fatal traffic crashes on Gold Coast roads. Those crashes contributed to over 44% of all fatal crashes on the Gold Coast and represented twice the percentage of motorcycle riders killed on all Queensland roads.
And in addition to those who lost their lives, countless hundreds, possibly thousands, were seriously injured, some permanently.
In the face of horrifying statistics, government agencies realised that something different needed to be done. It was clear that the strategies they had in place were not working.
