  1. On Saturday morning MATES was invited to participate in the Logan Road Safety Strategy Launch held in the IKEA forecourt at Springwood. This road safety program is a partnership between Logan City Council, Queensland Police, Department of Transport & Main Roads, RACQ and Queensland Health.

The primary aim of this program is to reduce the number of lives lost and injuries sustained from road crashes in the Logan City Council/Logan area.

  2. Have you checked out the new Here For Life website? You can find it at http://hereforlife.qld.gov.au

Not only does it have the familiar Share Your Story section, of which I believe everyone knows and you can contribute to, but you can also order a free road rules refresher guide.

More importantly, under the Be Safe section, is some very useful content for motorcycle riders, and a link to the recently re-launched Motorcycle Safety website - http://www.motorcyclesafety.qld.gov.au

For new motorcycle riders it has great info about LAMS and what to look for when buying safety gear.

But for me, I like the Motorcycle IQ quiz which you can take in three different areas - road rules, motorcycle maintenance and trivia.  How good are you out of 10?

  3. Standing amongst a display of 1500 pairs of shoes is an eerie reminder of the number of people who unfortunately lost their lives in road crashes during the last year.

And 300 of those represented motorcyclists.

The display was one of 2 held last Friday in Brisbane and Melbourne to mark Fatality Free Friday, while other supporting events were run around the country to also bring awareness to road safety.

  4. This Friday - 28th May, 2010 - is Fatality Free Friday.

It’s the day we aim for zero deaths on our nation’s roads for the day.

Whether you’re riding a motorcycle, driving a car, a truck, or any other of form of vehicle on our roads this Friday you can do your part to help achieve this worthwhile goal.

  5. Behind every fatality and serious injury statistic there are thousands of stories. Around 1600 people die on Australian roads each year and another 140 people are seriously injured each day, requiring ongoing care. Thousands more are affected by road trauma through their work in the emergency services, legal professions and disability sector.

Unfortunately, we probably all know someone who has been affected by road trauma. Sandra Cook knows all too well - her father was killed in a freak traffic accident in 2004.

Together with Kerry Sunderland, the Adelaide-based producer and film-maker has created an online social network community called Journey Beyond Road Trauma.

  7. Imagine a motorcycle that warns you when you’re coming into a corner too fast ….

It could become a reality according to a report from the UK.

Motorcycles capable of warning riders when they’re speeding, cornering too fast or travelling too close to the vehicle in front are to begin UK road trials in June.

  8. We all know that excessive speed, and also riding at a speed that is inappropriate for the conditions or our skill level, is a major contributing factor in many motorcycle crashes. But what about travelling below the speed of the surrounding traffic - is that dangerous too? Can you put yourself at risk by travelling too slowly?

Well, the short answer is a very definite “yes”.

Now before I get too far into this let me make two things very clear….

  9. I found this written up as a letter to the editor in our local paper (The Gold Coast Sun) from an ex cop about ‘accidents’ and driver training. Even though it doesn’t specifically mention motorcycles I think the same principles apply and I felt it was worth running it here ……

“ONCE again we witnessed the horrific death toll on our roads over the Christmas period.

As an ex-traffic police officer I ask myself ‘when are the politicians and bureaucrats going to realise that all their band-aid treatments have been a total failure?’
